I was walking in Graffham, West Sussex—the village where I was born—when he appeared. A polo pony came charging across the field, hooves thundering and nostrils flaring. Then he stopped at the fence and glanced away with complete indifference, as if I wasn’t worth his attention.
 
Look closely and you’ll spot a wisp of straw at the corner of his mouth, like he’s chewing a cheroot. Cool, curious and utterly magnificent. I called him Horsey.
That chance encounter became one of my favourite pieces. I hand-gilded the sepia photograph with gold leaf using a process I have spent years developing. The warm amber tones and gold create a rich, honeyed glow that shifts with the light.
